A new paper co-led by Prof. Weitz has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Entitled “Evidence for temporal partitioning of phosphorus uptake in microbial communities of the North Atlantic Ocean,” the study reveals that marine microbes reduce competition by absorbing nutrients at different times of day, offering new insight into how diverse microbial communities coexist in nutrient-poor waters.
As shared by CMNS, the findings “highlight how temporal niche partitioning may facilitate coexistence in nutrient-limited ocean ecosystems.”
Weitz co-led the study with Dr. Daniel Muratore, a postdoctoral fellow at the Santa Fe Institute and former Ph.D. student in the Weitz Group.
