Prof. Weitz writes about cancelling large events due to Covid-19
March 15, 2020

Prof. Joshua Weitz — along with Richard E. Lenski, Lauren A. Meyers, and Johnathan Dushoff  — wrote an opinion piece in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about the painful but practical decisions that will have to be made to mitigate Covid-19 spread. Citing the NCAA’s decision to restrict the number of fans allowed in upcoming March Madness games as prudent, the professors predict more such decisions ahead.

It comes down to simple probability.

Even if only a few individuals have COVID-19, the collective chance that one (or more) infected people show up at a large gathering can rapidly approach 100%.
